America, Guests Who Came to Dinner (and Stayed)
By Evelyn Patricia Terry
Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Evelyn Patricia Terry, 2016. Series variant, each unique.
Altered book. Materials: mixed media original prints, artist' hair, thread. Signed and dated.
Evelyn Patricia Terry: "Belongs to a series of altered books using an edition of screenprints, produced in 1981, with black ink on white Stonehenge paper. The text, in my handwriting, tells the same story on each book's pages, in this series, of America's current political reality – diversity and its origins. … Additionally, the text reflects that all nationalities, inhabiting America, came by various means, for various reasons, and are here.
"This series uses handwriting for the text aesthetically meandering around the imagery. The front and back cover designs are created from original etchings that I produced during my 40-plus year career as a printmaker. Both cover and page imagery has been cut, torn, and sewn different ways in each book. Sometimes my hair is added.
"As a youngster, my 'nappy' hair was a source of shame. I was relieved to discover that brainwashed consumers believe themselves unworthy and allow commercials to sell us beauty at a cost to our self-esteem and health. With a paradigm shift, my once pressed and straightened hair evolved to dread locks, which I happily use as fodder in this series of artist's books. "
