Span
By Carrie Ann Plank and Macy Chadwick
Academy of Art University, San Francisco: Carrie Ann Plank / Macy Chadwick, 2014. Edition of 100.
7 x 5" closed, single opening. Carousel structure. Letterpress printed. Die cut and printed on Fabriano Rosapina with a Murillo cover. Bound in paper over boards. Signed and numbered by Plank and Chadwick.
Carrie Ann Plank: "The book is an edition of 100 with an artist proof for each student participant. The project was designed by myself and Macy Chadwick and printed with the help of students at the Academy of Art University as a demonstration for this year's SGC international conference. The entire edition was printed, die cut, and constructed in one day utilizing every press in our studios simultaneously. (It was intense!) Our goal was to help create a fundraiser for our students to attend the SGC international conference in 2015 and all proceeds from the sale of the book will directly fund the student participants."
Jenny Hinchcliff, redletterdayzine: "As the name suggests, Span is a project about both bay bridges: the 'new' one (which debuted last year) and the 'old' one (which hasn’t been torn down yet). Both bridges link San Francisco to the east bay. With multiple press runs and die cuts, this three-dimensional beauty has all the surprise of a traditional pop-up book and the craftsmanship inherent to top notch artists’ books."

Produced on location in Corciano, Italy, in the Summer of 2010 during a Fine Art Study Abroad Italy Printmaking and Book Arts program.
Carrie Ann Plank: "I'm very interested in the visual portrayal of information systems and how this visualization impacts meaning. I’ve been experimenting with ways to reorganize and reinterpret found imagery. I find an amazing beauty in charts, graphs, and other visual detritus. Both c’é l’alta acqua and XX were inspired by a visual representation of an information system: respectively, an art historical timeline and a 16th-century Italianate depiction of wind patterns."
