the same ... and yet
By Ian Ganassi
1999. Edition of 20.
5 x 8", 24 pages. Double-sided accordion with pop-ups. Artwork, design, letterpress printing and binding by Roni Gross. Paper case by Peter Schell. Photography by Yukari Hayashida. Text set in Gill Sans. Printed on Rockingford from polymer plates. One side of the accordion has simple drawings that become more and more specific along with an accumulating text. The other side uses photography to convey a movement language with an accompanying commentary.
An examination of how we use language to create a memory which we believe will make time stand still. We want to return to the same situation and have it appear as it did before. No matter how detailed the language, the past will never be able to adequately describe the present.

She Who Saw With Her Heart
By Roni Gross
1997. Edition of 50.
9.25 x 10.5", 25 pages. Gatefold boards covered in brocade with exposed sewn book inside. Text set in Post Antiqua. Printed on Somerset wit brush and ink drawings on overlays printed on Hiromi paper from polymer plates. With one colograph.
Roni Gross is fascinated with what people believe and what they practice. Folklore, folk tales, and superstition are fertile ground for her bookwork. This work is an Arabic folk tale that was passed down orally. In the process of creating the book, Roni discovered that the person who told her the story had not passed it on to her own children, believing that assimilation was their sole focus. When the teller of the tale saw it in book form it reawakened her interest in the stories of her culture; she then began to share them with her family. And, the beautiful Arabic script at the end of the tale was done by this woman.
Featured in New York Public Library's exhibit "Ninety From the Nineties" in the Type section: "Elements of Near Eastern architecture and decorative arts are paired with shaped text in this retelling of an Iraqi folktale."
