A Gift of Flowers
By I'Lee Hooker
2006. Edition of 150.

5.25 x 6 x 1.5" box contains two books: a stand alone accordion book with images of floral bouquets; and, a codex with quotations related to flowers. Magnetic closure for box. Floral images scanned on an Epson Perfection 2450. Formatted using Adobe Photoshop. Images printed on Epson Velvet archival paper, using an Epson 2200 printer. Box and book assembled by Alice Shaw.

I’Lee Hooker continues to share her passion for flowers and gardening.

From the introduction: "A bouquet of flowers is a favorite gift. The beauty, mystery, and fragrance of flowers wordlessly communicates our complex emotions for any occasion. With joy and gratitude these flowers have been gathered from my garden in Tiburon, CA, and from around our cabin in Tahoe, CA."

If we could see the miracle
Of a single flower clearly,
Our whole life would change.

The book of bouquets is a double-sided accordion construction. One side has the mounted images of flowers; on the back side of each image is a library-style book pocket from which slips a card with Hooker’s anecdotal information about that flower.

This is the Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’. They are a perennial that appears in my garden mid to late summer. Their common name is windflower and they cheerfully sway in the breeze until winter. They are a rather unruly bunch and would happily take over my garden if I didn’t strictly contain them.

Garden Secrets
By I'Lee Hooker
2005. Edition of 150.

4 x 4"; 12 page accordion fold book. Housed in box of corrugated plastic. Twelve scrolls in bottom of box tied with green ribbon. Leaves and flowers were scanned on a Epson Perfection 2450. Formatted using Adobe Photoshop. Printed on Epson Velvet archival paper, using an Epson 2200 printer.

I'Lee Hooker: "A couple of years ago I was out in the garden collecting plant samples to press and add to my pressed flower collection. A computer expert was here helping my husband, Tony, calibrate the colors on his computer. he took one look at my collection of plant material, tissues, stacks of old encyclopedias (for presses) and asked "why don't you just scan the flowers in on your computer?" With that little comment he opened my eyes to a whole new way of recording plants and flowers. The "secrets" have been gathered from a wide range of wise gardeners through out the ages."

Hooker's garden comes alive in this unfolding bloom of a book. The reader lifts the cover and the box folds out like the spreading of petals to reveal a lovely accordion book. Pick the blossom and underneath is a treasure trove of little seeds in the form of scrolls with plant - and life - wisdom.

A garden is always a series of losses set against a few triumphs, like life itself. ~ Mary Sarton
