(Beth Carls)

By Beth Carls
Minneapolis, Minnesota: Blue Valentine Press, 2007. Edition of 37.

In some ways we are each of us defined by our scars.…
First we are whole, then we are wounded, and finally we are scarred.

2.625 x 4"; 6 pages. Letterpress printed from photopolymer plates, sandragraph blocks, and linoleum cuts using a Vandercook 219. Printed as a single 8 x 10.5" sheet then map-folded. Laid in a handmade hardcover wrap with bone closure and waxed linen thread. Cover papers printed in using a sandragraph block. Sealed with layers of Renaissance wax.

Beth Carls: "The words are my own. No real exciting story, it was originally done as a part of a swap with about 12 other book artists around the US. Unfortunately, the swap sort of fizzled, but I finished the project….I really like printing, and over printing, I dig the textures and what happens sort of organically. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I also wanted to play up the idea of 'road map' as metaphor, that's how I ended up with that structure and the polymer plate of the street map."
